When a critical incident or disaster impacts a community, emergency services and first responders address the community’s immediate safety and urgent needs. Following this initial response, Lifeline Loddon Mallee is available to provide on-the-ground support and practical pathways for recovery.

Community Led Approach

Lifeline Loddon Mallee’s Disaster Recovery and Critical Incident Team use a community led approach, first assessing community needs and potential risks, then delivering practical, locally informed responses to address the grief, shock, and loss that often accompany significant trauma. 

Our team works alongside emergency agencies and local community partners to bring support closer to where people live - focusing on strengthening community connection, restoring wellbeing and supporting individuals and families as they navigate the recovery process.

What are critical incidents

Critical incidents may include an accidental death within a community, suicide, major injury, or other traumatic events that cause significant community impact. We also respond to natural disasters once the immediate emergency phase has passed, supporting individuals, families and communities as they begin the recovery journey. 

Our goal is to understand, to be present and to listen - especially to those who are most vulnerable and most impacted by the circumstances. We take time to assess potential risks to individuals within the community and provide timely connections to appropriate lifelines and counselling services, particularly in response to the grief and loss that often surrounds critical incidents and natural disasters.

    Originally piloted in 2025, the program was funded by Lifeline Australia’s Local Initiative Fund as an initiative designed to be across Australia. The program framework, developed by Lifeline Loddon Mallee, is now being used by other Lifeline centres across Australia.
